Hood Petz

About Us

  • We acquired our first guinea pigs in the 1980s and have had them many times throughout the years.
In 2017 we decided to bring them into our lives again.  It has been wonderful having them back in our home!
  • We acquired our first hedgehogs in 2005 began breeding hedgehogs in 2006
The hedgehogs have enriched our lives in so many ways.  In 2017 we decided to scale down the hedgehogs a bit but we cannot imagine life without them.  They are here to stay.
  • We are USDA licensed.
We take licensing very seriously and adhere to all requirements.
  • We are FWC permitted.
All Florida residents who sell any kind of animal are legally required to have this permit.
  • Our animals are pedigreed and have been carefully selected.
We look at many things when selecting our breeding animals.  We consider all aspects of health traits  and temperamental traits, not just color or cuteness.
  • Our breeding animals have diverse and healthy bloodlines.  Many have been retained from our own babies and others have come from breeders across the United States and even Canada.
It should never be assumed that because an animal comes from a particular state/region that it is unrelated to animals from a different state/region.
  • We do not line-breed or inbreed.
We believe that diversity is key in producing superior, healthy offspring.  When selecting animals for pairing, we look at ancestors as far back as possible.  We make every effort to avoid common ancestors.  In some hedgehogs, we have as many as 80+ generations of lineage.
  • Over the years we have had many different species of animals.
We've lived with various livestock, many species of small mammals, a variety of birds and numerous reptiles.

Our current residents include:

  • 2 Nigerian dwarf goats
  • 2 African pygmy goats
  • 3 dachshunds
  • 1 cat
  • 5 guinea pigs
  • many hedgehogs

Our Ultimate Goal:

We strive to produce healthy, friendly, gorgeous babies and match them with new owners that are educated and well-prepared to care for their new pet.

How We Think and Operate:

  • We LOVE our animals.  They're living, breathing creatures, not items or products.
  • Our first objective is to "better the species" by carefully selecting the best quality for breeding, in hopes of producing superior offspring.
  • We believe that every breeder should be well educated about the species that they are producing.  We continue to educate ourselves with new information at every opportunity.
  • We offer to educate others and help whenever possible; regardless if the person purchased from us.
  • We offer lifetime support to our buyers.
  • We are always willing to provide a home for hedgehogs/guinea pigs in need, regardless of whether or not it came from us.

We ask a lot of questions when we counsel with buyers and we encourage our buyers to ask as many questions as they can think of.  It is very important for every buyer to know the facts about the proper care and treatment of the animal so that they will be able to keep the pet healthy and happy.

We ask all buyers to contact us in the event of an illness so that we may track the health and longevity of our bloodlines.
